Great as a gift or made just for fun, seed bombs are a great way of engaging kids. They can help bring a wide range of flowers to a bare area of soil.
What you'll need:
Flour.
Soil or peat-free compost.
Water.
Seeds. We recommend native British wildflower seeds.
A bowl or container to mix everything in.
You may be able to pick up free wildflower seeds from a local seed swap group, you can collect these yourself from existing plants in your garden (see our plants for free article), or you can buy wildflower seed packets from a local garden centre or shop.
Method:
In a bowl, mix together 1 cup of seeds with 10 cups of soil or peat-free compost.
Slowly mix in water with your hands until it has the consistency of dough, and everything sticks together.
Roll the mixture into firm, golf-sized balls.
Leave the balls to dry in a sunny spot. This may take a day or two.
Plant your seed bombs by throwing them at bare areas of soil, or give them away as a gift to friends and family.
Plants to include:
Wildflower species from the RHS Plants for Pollinators list, which you may wish to add to your seed bombs, include:
