Make seed bombs

Seed bombs

Great as a gift or made just for fun, seed bombs are a great way of engaging kids. They can help bring a wide range of flowers to a bare area of soil.

What you'll need:

  • Flour.
  • Soil or peat-free compost.
  • Water.
  • Seeds. We recommend native British wildflower seeds.
  • A bowl or container to mix everything in.
You may be able to pick up free wildflower seeds from a local seed swap group, you can collect these yourself from existing plants in your garden (see our plants for free article), or you can buy wildflower seed packets from a local garden centre or shop.

Method:

  • In a bowl, mix together 1 cup of seeds with 10 cups of soil or peat-free compost.
  • Slowly mix in water with your hands until it has the consistency of dough, and everything sticks together.
  • Roll the mixture into firm, golf-sized balls.
  • Leave the balls to dry in a sunny spot. This may take a day or two.
  • Plant your seed bombs by throwing them at bare areas of soil, or give them away as a gift to friends and family.

Plants to include:

Wildflower species from the RHS Plants for Pollinators list, which you may wish to add to your seed bombs, include:
  • Chamomile - Latin name: Chamaemelum nobile.
  • Common knapweed - Latin name: Centaurea nigra.
  • Common poppy - Latin name: Papaver rhoeas.
  • Cornflower - Latin name: Centaurea cyanus.
  • Corn Cockle - Latin name: Agrostemma githago.
  • Yarrow - Latin name: Achillea millefolium.
  • Yellow Rattle - Latin name: Rhinanthus minor.
