Eco home cleaning

Making your own cleaning recipes and using more environmentally friendly ingredients is easy. It avoids the long list of chemicals found in many shop bought products and can reduce the purchase of single-use plastic bottles.

The main ingredients you'll need are:

  • White vinegar.
  • Bicarbonate of soda (also called baking soda).
  • Citric acid, or lemon juice squeezed directly from the fruit.
  • Liquid soap, or soap flakes.
  • General purpose cleaner

    Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar.
  • 1/4 cup bicarbonate of soda.
  • 2 litres of water.
  • Method:
Mix ingredients together, pour into a spray bottle, and use on tiles, kitchen surfaces and hard bathroom surfaces.

    Laundry

    Ingredient:
  • Liquid soap, also known as soap flakes.
  • Method:
Follow the instructions on the packet for quantities.

Great for day-to-day washes, although heavy staining may require additional treatment.

Liquid soap can also be used for cleaning wooden and laminate floors, and floor tiles including natural stone.

    Removing limescale

    Removing limescale

    Ingredient:
  • Citric acid.
  • Alternatively, you can use lemon juice on kettles and stainless steel taps, which naturally contains citric acid.
  • Method:
Follow the instructions on the packet for quantities. You only need a small amount to descale a kettle. You can also use it on stainless steel taps, showerheads, and the toilet.

If you've descaled your kettle using citric acid, add some cold water and pour the resulting warm solution into your toilet to help reduce limescale there. Ensure you do NOT pour boiling water into your toilet, as this can break the porcelain.

    Stockists

These products are sold at high street and online retailers including the Ethical Superstore, Ocado, and B&Q.

There are also lots of zero waste shops across the UK, where your bottles and containers can be refilled with eco-friendly cleaning products and ingredients. Great for reducing single-use plastic waste.
